Dear EC-TEL community,
due to the worldwide COVID-19 situation, the recent announcements of the German government and the difficulties connected to planning what lays in the months ahead, the EC-TEL chairs have, after much deliberation, come to the conclusion that a face-to-face EC-TEL2020 is no longer feasible. Planning and organizing a face-to-face conference requires many long-term resource commitments, all of which are currently very uncertain. The health office of Heidelberg has also advised us against holding a larger face-to-face event in fall 2020.
For this reason, we have decided to organise EC-TEL 2020 fully online. We think that it is wiser to invest our resources into planning a well-designed online conference with plentiful opportunities for networking, interacting with ideas and experts in the community. This has the major advantage of requiring lower conference fees and providing access to researchers and students that may otherwise not have been able to attend an EC-TEL event. As said before, Springer proceedings will be published as usual and the review process will also follow the standard procedure. We will inform you about our conference fees soon.
We hope you are safe and healthy and we continue looking forward to receiving your submissions.
To all authors and potential participants of EC-TEL2020: We are aware that the current situation entails a high level of insecurity and unclarity. To provide you with some level of planning we would like to confirm some slight changes of our planning:
We have adapted the submission deadline for abstracts with a new deadline on 6 April, 23:59 AOE. We have decided that a submission of an abstract is not mandatory anymore and research papers without a previous abstract submission will also be accepted for review at the paper deadline on 20 April, 23:59 AOE. However, you would help us a lot in these times if you could signal your intention to submit a paper by sending a short abstract.
We would like to confirm again that we will have an online event in case the face-to-face conference will not go through. This online-event will give authors an opportunity to present their work. The conference registration rates will be reduced in case we will have only an online event. If possible, we will also have a face-to-face or blended event depending on the future situation.
We will make sure that Springer proceedings will be published no matter in which format the conference will happen.
We are aware that our community is in a special situation since many community members are currently helping other colleagues and their own institutions to prepare the current and upcoming semester for online teaching and learning. We will make sure that there is room during the conference to reflect about the crisis and potential solutions for the future.
We are very pleased to announce two of the keynote speakers for EC-TEL 2020:
- Jens Mönig: Researcher at SAP (Germany) and creator of Snap!
- Linda Castañeda: Professor at the Faculty of Education at University of Murcia (Spain)
The program chairs, local organizing chairs and local organizing team of ECTEL/DELFI/HDI2020 are constantly monitoring the situation with regard to the outbreak of Covid-19. For now we have decided to continue with the conference organisation and we will ensure that the conference proceedings will be published and that authors will have an opportunity to present their work to the conference participants. It is impossible to foresee the situation in September and we have adapted our planning with several check-points in which we can still adapt according to the current situation. Our planning is as follows:
We further disseminate the call for papers and ask you to submit papers to the call for papers according to the deadlines
We will keep the possibility of a face-to-face event as long open as possible, but will also prepare for a hybrid event or full online-event
In case of a later decision to organize the conference as a hybrid event or full online-event, you will be refunded costs connected to the face-to-face event
We all hope that you stay safe and we look forward to receiving your outstanding work which is now more needed than ever.
